BIPOLAR DISORDER
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder sometimes called manic-depressive illness or manic-depression that characteristically involves cycles of depression and elation or mania. It is characterized by unpredictable changes in mood and impaired social function.
Manic episodes may include symptoms such as high energy, reduced need for sleep, and loss of touch with reality, while depressive episodes may include symptoms such as low energy, low motivation, and loss of interest in daily activities. Mood episodes last days to months at a time and may also be associated with suicidal thoughts.
How We Help
The exact cause of bipolar disorder is unknown. However, it is thought to occur due to genetics, alternations in neurotransmitters, and psychosocial factors. Our integrative approach to healing addresses all three variables. It utilizes talk-therapy, medications if needed, ketamine infusion therapy, mindfulness training, or transcranial magnetic stimulation. We do everything possible to help you reach health and balance.
“There’s an unlearning process,” said Dr. Brent Lawlis, Chief Clinical Officer at Alleviant Health Centers. “People with BPD have often grown up within a borderline family dynamic, so we look at environmental relationships to the other family members.”
Lawlis said he recommends books I Hate you, Don’t Leave Me, and Stop Walking On Eggshells. “Effective boundaries need to be set and though it might cause chaos in the beginning, in the end, tough love can be a big help,” he said.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) or group therapy is helpful because when you’re talking with peers who experience what you felt or thought it’s more relatable and there’s no feeling of being ‘targeted’,” Lawlis said.
Alleviant Health Centers offers medication management to treat the symptoms of BPD – to stabilize things or give patients a little time to think before they act impulsively.
Lawlis describes the insular cortex as the part of the brain that regulates, compassion and altruism – caring about human beings. “In real-time imaging, those parts of the brain don’t light up with someone with BPD. But it’s possible to change the brain to unlearn what you’ve learned,” he said.
Ketamine Infusion therapy is used during the depressive phase to ease the symptoms of depression and stimulate new neural growth, followed by talk therapy sessions to integrate emotional experiences and heal trauma.
“You don’t have to live with this struggle any longer.”

Ketamine Infusion Therapy
Ketamine Infusion Therapy can provide rapid relief from depressive symptoms for a significant number of patients. In controlled, specific amounts, ketamine stimulates the creation and remodeling of neurons that have atrophied in depression. Approximately 70% of patients may experience a significant reduction in symptoms – many during their first infusion, which creates an excellent opportunity for rapid healing of emotional trauma with a therapist post infusion.
